Love Island's Savanna thought her future was destroyed after going on ITV show

Savanna Darnell had no idea what she was letting herself in for on Love Island, according to her mum.

The 26-year-old signed up for the ITV show in 2018 after being approached to take part when she was 22.

Despite her initial excitement, Savanna's time on the show was to be short lived - she was out after just five days in Casa Amor.

However her mum, Karen, 56, reckons the experience had a damaging effect on the actress's mental health.

The daughter of 80s singer Kid Creole, Savanna suffered vile online abuse and thought her career had 'died' after the show, Karen says.

"Savanna had been offered counselling after she came out, but she said she didn’t need it.

"She thought she didn’t. But once she got back, she started to look online at what was being said about her," she told MailOnline.

"On the second day, I came into the bedroom one morning and she was crying. She’d been up all night, scrolling through all the things that had been said about her, criticising her hair, saying she should just die. It was horrendous."

Karen added that her daughter didn't want to get out of bed after the show and had to have therapy to 'sort herself out'.

She also claimed Savanna had a "connection" with contestant Wes Nelson, who told the actress he was going to bring her back to the main villa.

However Karen said their relationship didn't fit with Wes's 'storyline', adding that loads of scenes with her daughter weren't shown.

ITV says that due to time constraints it is not possible to show everything that happens, but it is always their intention to produce a show that is a fair and accurate representation of life in the villa.

Many contestants go on Love Island to further their career and Savanna was no different.

A successful performing artist, she had a role in the Thriller tour and also starred in Aladdin with Will Smith.

However, after the show Karen says her daughter's agent didn't take her calls - claiming she'd been "ghosted".

Thankfully, Savanna was approached by her previous bosses from the Thriller tour, with her mum pointing out she'd worked "really hard" to get her confidence back.

When approached by the Mirror for comment, ITV pointed out its Duty of Care protocols, which include the "extensive welfare measures remain in place to provide support to programme participants before, during and after filming".

It also said that while it can "never discuss individual islanders' duty of care in order to adhere to medical confidentiality", there are a number of testimonies from previous contestants praising the show for its conduct.

Series 4's Eyal Booker told Sky News: "I don't have a bad word to say because I have been supported before the process, during the process and after the process up until now, and I will continue to be supported.”

Meanwhile Amy Hart told the Mirror the level of care on the show both during and after the filming is "20 out of 10."

"We have a welfare person that comes into the villa so we're in very good hands," she said.

Love Island is on ITV2 at 9pm
