Love Island's Laura Whitmore defended by fans after online backlash during launch show

Laura Whitmore has been defended by Love Island fans after being the target of 'online hate' as the new series kicked off on Monday night.

The 2022 run of the hit ITV dating show is Laura's third at the helm, after she took over from the late Caroline Flack two years ago for Winter Love Island. Irish host Laura was at the centre of the action on Monday night as she went into the new Love Island villa to drop a major bombshell on the single girls, that, rather than them stepping forward for the lads they were interested on, the public had already decided their fate.

After stirring things up no end with that announcement, Laura made her exit. But, while she was only on screen for a short time during the Love Island launch, some critics were quick to take to Twitter to have a go at her. One responded: "I cannot understate how bad Laura Whitmore is at this job," with a second reacting: "Laura Whitmore is such a s**t host."

Another tweeted: "Laura Whitmore needs to be dropped, she is an awful presenter."

But fans of Laura were quick to leap to her defence, especially given the 'Be Kind' message that was spread by so many after original Love Island host Caroline Flack took her own life in February 2020. Angry at some of the tweets they saw, one viewer posted: "Ah, so Laura Whitmore is trending because utter scum are still utter scum. “BuT iT’s NoT mE”… Bullshit. It is you, you sneering piece of shit. All of you."

Equally unimpressed by the online hate directed at Laura, another wrote: "So apparently people are being nasty to Laura Whitmore for being “too old” to be the host of Love Island..did you idiots not learn anything from when Caroline passed away over people being nasty to her. BE KIND. It costs NOTHING." Another post i Laura's defence read: "*Checks to see why Laura Whitmore is trending* Ah yes, I see the Be Kind crew got bored and decided she’s fair game too.."
