Love Island 's Gemma Owen was mocked by National Television Awards viewers on Thursday night [October 13].
The reality TV star took to the stage with dad Michael Owen at Wembley's OVO Arena to present the award for Serial Drama Performance, but the father-daughter's 'attempt at banter' divided viewers watching the show at home – with some even mercilessly mocking the teenager for seemingly having to be told to open the envelope.
Although kinder viewers reminded others 'this is all new to Gemma', that didn't stop many on social media ripping into the PrettyLittleThing brand ambassador – with one even jokingly claiming the star's awkward exchanges with her famous father had 'ruined their life'.
After Gemma and Michael revealed the names of each of the four stars up for the award for Serial Drama Performance and clips of the nominees work were shown on screen, it was time for the father-daughter duo to announce the winner – something that prompted an awkward moment.
As the camera panned back to Michael, 42, and Gemma, 19, there was a slight pause before the two stars resumed their presenting duties – with the retired footballer heard telling his daughter under his breath to open the envelope.
Gemma went on to announce Emmerdale's Mark Charnock had won for his portrayal as Marlon Dingle, but viewers watching at home were more interested in commenting on her presenting skills.
"Loving the way Michael Owen had to give Gemma instructions how to open an envelope," one savage viewer quipped on Twitter, with another adding: "Not seen a more awkward father daughter duo on tv than Michael and Gemma Owen #NTAs."
"Not being over dramatic when I say Michael and Gemma Owen’s attempt at ‘banter’ at the NTAs just has ruined my life," a third sensationally declared online, with another critic joking: "Gemma didn’t get the instructions about presenting awards at #NTAs First open the envelope."
Amongst the criticism, some pointed out how new Gemma is to all things showbiz – with an account dedicated to the star and her boyfriend Luca Bish tweeting: "At the end of the day people need to realise this is all new to Gemma. She’s never done anything like this before and tbh she did amazing."
"You gotta feel sorry for Gemma Owen. Being told how to open an envelope and how to read out the winners name at the #NTAs is pretty savage live tv," another sympathetic fan mused on Twitter.
One thing all NTA viewers on social media could agree on was how stunning Gemma looked at the event, with the celebrity offspring stunning in an eye-catching sparkly gold full-length gown as she attended the bash with her dad.
The National Television Awards 2022 were originally due to take place on September 15 but were put on hold as a mark of respect following the death of the Queen.
The Masked Singer's Joel Dommett hosted the long-awaited ceremony for the second time, with Martin Lewis making a dig at the government as he picked up his award for TV Expert, and Strictly Come Dancing's Anton Du Beke bagging Best TV Judge.
