Love Island’s Gemma Owen continues to resist Michael Owen namedrop

When the 2022 cast of Love Island was first announced, many eyes immediately panned to a certain Gemma Owen. The surname drew the attention of football fans as it was revealed that she is in fact the daughter of former Liverpool and England striker Michael Owen.

However, two episodes in and Gemma has resisted the temptation to reveal all about her famous father. Incidentally, during Tuesday evening's episode, Michael was simultaneously broadcasting on Channel 4 as a pundit for England’s 1-1 draw against Germany, with many joking that Michael would put himself through anything to avoid watching her daughter in the villa.

The 19-year old has come in for a fair amount of stick from Love Island viewers during her brief time on the show. Many fans feel that she shouldn’t have been allowed on the show due to her age.

Those calls were reinforced at the end of Tuesday’s episode after 27-year old latecomer Davide chose to couple up with her. Some viewers have even threatened to complain to Ofcom due to their concerns about the age gap.

Many took to social media to express their displeasure. @turabhn commented “Nothing like a 27-year-old grown man picking a girl that was 16 in lockdown one ey. #LoveIsland” while @seonghwasupreme said: "19 and 27, call Ofcom, send a parents evening text #LoveIsland.”

However, Gemma has avoided doing the thing that many critics thought she would jump at the opportunity to do - spilling all about her dad. This could have been especially tempting during the series' first challenge which saw islanders reveal secrets about themselves
