Love Island's Afia Tonkmor on whether the contestants know Michael Owen is Gemma's dad

Love Island star Afia Tonkmor has shared why Michael Owen is never mentioned on the show. The 25-year-old opened up about villa life after being axed from the dating programme and was asked whether football legend's daughter, Gemma Owen, has discussed her famous father in the villa.

Bombshell Afia, who made her late entrance alongside Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu, was the first to be dumped from the 2022 series. Her exit followed Newport student Liam Llewellyn, who chose to leave the show after just one week. You can read more about this here.

And following her return from Majorca, Afia has answered some questions about the show. During a Q&A on her Instagram stories earlier this week, one fan asked Afia: "Do they know who Gemma's dad is?"

Afia replied: "If people do know, I did know before I went in because I watched her VT. But if people do know, they don't care… nobody really cares. I don't know who he is, I know he's a football guy, it was never, ever spoken about in my presence."

While Gemma hasn't named her dad, she has spoken about him during a rather awkward exchange with Luca Bish. During a chat on the terrace early on in the series, Luca asked Gemma: "Who do you feel like your family would get on best with out of all the boys in here?"

The 19-year-old replied: "You. Because you're sporty and you're into football and into racing. I think my dad would have stuff in common with you."

"Would your dad and me go out and do things together?" Luca asked: "Or does he not get close [with your boyfriends]?"

Gemma responded: "He was quite close with my first boyfriend and I think he appreciates a guy who is into sports and all that kind of stuff. So I heard you like talking about football and racing and all that, so I'm like hmm."

Gemma failed to namedrop Michael and without knowing his true identity, Luca said: "I enjoy playing football. I know what I'm talking about with football as well. Let's see if he knows what he's talking about."

Love Island continues at 9pm on ITV2 and ITV Hub. Episodes are available the following morning on BritBox. For more showbiz and television stories get our newsletter here.
