Love Island finally returned for a new series on Monday, but the person who made the biggest impression was Gemma Owen for all of the wrong reasons.

The daughter of footballer Michael Owen made no effort to hide her disappointment after being coupled up with Welsh student Liam Llewellyn.

This was most apparent when she refused to kiss him when the islanders played a game of Truth or Dare.

Viewers were most outraged however when she made fun of Luca Bish’s surname.

Despite vowing before going in not to brag about her famous dad, the dressage champion wasted no time in dropping her last name (which none of the lads seemed to connect to the former England player).

When Bish revealed his full name, Owen declared it “unfortunate”.

Naturally he seemed offended as was everyone at home on his behalf who took to social media to weigh-in.

“Gemma telling Luca his surname is unfortunate. Um your general outlook is unfortunate,’ wrote one.

“Nah Gemma did Liam and Luca wrong and it’s only been day one,” declared another.

Former Islanders were among those criticising her too.

Series 3 alumni Marcel Somerville tweeted: "Yo can’t lie Gemma’s energy is mad! How she coming across like this on the first day! The rudeness #loveisland."

While series 7 veteran Chloe Burrows wrote: "Gemma ur attitude STINKS mate #loveisland."

Former winner Amber Gill however urged fans to give Owen “a break” as she reflected on her own experience on the show.

Gill wrote: “Let’s cut Gemma a break because you all thought I was a b**** for saying a man didn’t suit sunglasses when he didn’t.

“I’m a well liked b***h though,” she added.

Another topic of debate was Owen’s age who at 19 is the ITV2 dating show’s youngest ever contestant.

Some questioned why someone so young would be looking for “the one” and debated if the minimum age to appear on the show should be 21.

“Why is a 19 year old on the show? This is so sad,” commented one.

“Ngl [not gonna lie] the minimum age for Love island should be 21+ 19 is wayyyy to young,” agreed a second.
