Love Island viewers were left outraged on Monday as the islanders took on the Lip Service challenge in their couples.
The islanders took part in the ‘Lip Service’ challenge, which saw the boys guzzle a mouthful of ingredients before sliding across a dancefloor where they have to transfer it to the girls’ mouths.
The girls then had to spit the contents into a giant cocktail glass and the first couple to fill it won.
As the couples get up close and personal in this kissing challenge, Luca and Danica unexpectedly came out on top and won the grisly task.
But after Love Island bosses revealed that the much-hated food challenge would not feature in this series of the ITV2 show, fans slammed the decision to inexplicably bring back the "gross" segment anyway.
Taking to Twitter, one wrote: “I thought they said they weren't doing this challenge this year?!” as another posted: “The producers are liars I swore they said these challenges were no more. Why do they hate us?”
“I thought they were dropping this challenge…” one wrote as another tweeted: “I thought we got rid of this biohazard challenge.”
Another demanded: “hold on?? I thought games like this were done with?”
At the end of the challenge, one wrote: “Producers pls let this be the last time. Y’all said you got rid of this!”
“These challenges are too sickening,” one fan posted as another said: “These challenges should be banned actually vile.”
Executive producer Mike Spencer explained how the dating series is progressing as it entered its eight year on air and while answering questions during a Q&A on Reddit, he was asked by one fan: "Why the spitting food challenges. I beg youse to stop, such a waste of food! I really think doing challenges with incentives or couple building activities would be so much better."
He replied: "We are moving away from the food challenges as previously seen so hopefully that sorts that one."
The producer was also quizzed on whether Islanders would be filmed more while they're having their meals.
He added: "We try to strive to be better as an environmentally friendly production and we try to be better with waste in this day and age.”
While viewers thought they would not be subjected to watching contestants spit food into one another's mouths this year, Love Island fans saw the challenge return regardless.
