A cliffhanger, one of TV's most prized tricks to keep viewers interested and tune in for the next episode, is more or less redundant in the world of streaming and on-demand box sets. But Love Island fans are not buying into the concept and have been left fuming yet again that the show's makers keep them waiting for the dramatic conclusions to dumpings and the like, on the ITV2 show.
Several times this series of Love Island, which airs live every night, there have been teases about dumpings and recouplings, but when it comes to the crux the actual reveals are carried over to the next evening's episode. This happened with the most recent episode, on Tuesday, July 26, as three couples were thought to be in danger but the result will air tonight, July 27. Viewers weren't content with moaning about another cliffhanger, they were also tamping that there was no preview of the action in the next episode.
Adam Collard and Paige Thorne, Indiyah Polack and Dami Hope, and Jamie Allen and Danica Taylor were all confirmed to be facing leaving the show just days before the final, as the public vote result was announced on Tuesday night.
Amid predictions about who's going and why the programme-makers keep using the age-old ploy came thick and fast, fans were miffed that a cliffhanger was used even though it's a guaranteed way of making people keep tuning in.
One Twitter user mused: "Why do we always get left on a cliffhanger ???" James O'Donnell tweeted: "WHAT?! They ended it on that cliffhanger?!"
Another said: "I avoided twitter cause I didn’t wanna see who went home but ofc it was left on a cliffhanger."
And one fan said on Twitter that: "Cliffhangers this year is totally ruining #LoveIsland."
The Love Island final will air next week, Monday August 1, when one couple will be crowned winners. It was revealed last week that last year's champions, Liam Reardon and Millie Court have split up.
Love Island continues at 9pm on ITV2 and ITV Hub. Episodes are available the following morning on BritBox. For more showbiz and television stories get our newsletter here.
