Love Actually's Richard Curtis finally reveals Juliet's job - and says clue is on set

Love Actually director Richard Curtis has finally revealed Juliet's job - saying the clue was in the set all along.

The character was played by Keira Knightley 20 years ago - but little is known about her career.

In the film, Juliet calls her hubby's best friend Mark - surrounded by swatches - to find out if he has any footage of her wedding.

In a new interview with his daughter, Scarlett, 27, Richard, 66, reveals Juliet was in fact an interior designer - something he says he thought was obvious from the scene.

After being grilled by the TV writer, Richard said: "I'm hurt that you don't know. I think it's very clear from the set design while she's making the phone call to Andrew Lincoln that she has worked for quite a long time as an interior decorator."

However, he did concede Juliet's job was somewhat of an afterthought, admitting: "Everyone panicked and said, 'what kind of a room is she making the phone call from?'

"I said, 'how about she's an interior decorator and so there's lots of swatches and some paint?' It was an afterthought."

Not convinced by the her dad's explanation, Scarlett asked her Instagram followers if they guessed Juliet's job correctly.

After the poll, a whopping 96% admitted they had no idea what the character did for a living with many saying they thought Juliet worked for a PR firm.

Scarlett then joked how an 18-year-old was expected to break into the ultra competitive industry at such a young age.

Richard replied: "I'm repeatedly surprised [when I hear] that Keira was only 18," he quipped back. "My feeling is that her performance is that of a 23-year-old so she's had time to establish herself in that particular trade."

But Scarlett wasn't having any of it, saying: "As a writer, with that character development, [Juliet] didn't have much of an interior life, yet alone an interior design business."

"I can't believe you would say that," Richard teased. "I feel like it's calling out in every frame. It says "I care about interior design."'

The TV writer, who has a healthy 89,000 followers on Instagram, captioned the conversation: "THE BIG REVEAL - a week ago me and Dad got in a fight because he claimed it was very clear what Keira Knightley’s job in Love Actually was and I fervently disagreed.

"I took it to the people and they wanted an answer. Here it is. Happy Christmas."
