Louvre Museum in Paris reopens for visitors in masks

The Louvre Museum in Paris reopened today for about 7,000 visitors, instead of the usual 50,000 each day in the peak summer months.

About 70 per cent of the giant museum, housing 30,000 of its vast collection of works including the Mona Lisa, is again accessible.

Visitors must wear face masks and make a reservation.

“It’s very emotional for all the teams that have prepared this reopening,” said Jean-Luc Martinez, the museum’s director.

In Spain, 71,000 people in north-western Galicia went into lockdown today amid fears of a new coronavirus outbreak.

Movement to and from the coastal district of A Marina will be prohibited until Friday, two days before the region holds elections.

A similar small-scale lockdown was announced on Saturday in north-eastern Catalonia affecting around 200,000 people.

The government in Kosovo has reimposed a curfew in the capital Pristina and three other cities after a significant rise in cases.

Premier Avdullah Hoti announced the curfew would be in force from 9pm to 5am. Authorities reported eight Covid-19 deaths, its highest total since the start of the outbreak in March.
