Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming, a Republican and former appointee of Donald Trump, has declared his candidacy for the U.S. Senate in an attempt to unseat current Senator Bill Cassidy, also a Republican, who is up for reelection in 2026.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Fleming criticized Senator Cassidy, accusing him of failing the people of Louisiana. Fleming specifically pointed to Cassidy's vote to convict Trump in the former President's impeachment trial following the events of January 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol.
Fleming, 73, emphasized his commitment to Trump's 'America First' agenda and criticized Republicans who distanced themselves from the former President during his final year in office.
Senator Cassidy, 67, who is currently serving his second term, is expected to run for reelection in Louisiana, a state that has historically supported Republican candidates. Despite winning his previous election comfortably, Cassidy faced backlash for his vote to convict Trump, leading to censure by Louisiana Republicans.
While Cassidy has not officially announced his candidacy for a third term, his spokesperson confirmed that the Senator has expressed his intention to seek reelection when the time is right.
Cassidy's team highlighted his recent accomplishments, including advocacy for veterans, securing tax relief for disaster victims, and efforts to address Social Security payment issues affecting certain recipients.
John Fleming's Senate bid marks the beginning of his campaign to return to Capitol Hill, where he previously served four terms in the U.S. House. Following his tenure in Congress, Fleming held positions in the Trump administration before being elected as Louisiana Treasurer in 2024.
