Louise Minchin quits BBC Breakfast after 20 years as she delivers emotional speech on air

BBC Breakfast presenter Louise Minchin got emotional on Tuesday as she revealed she was quitting the show after two decades at the helm.

The popular host delivered the shock news in a live announcement on air as she sat alongside colleague Dan Walker.

She told millions of people watching at home: "Let me take a deep breath, everybody there is something I want to tell you about.

"It will be this year 20 years since I first presented this programme.

"Since then I've felt part of a huge, enormous BBC Breakfast family which includes everyone who works here, everyone on the team and every one of you who watches the programme.

"I've loved being part of it but - there is a but - I've decided that is time that I stop setting my alarm for 3.40 - sometimes if I'm feeling really rebellious 3.46 - in the morning and I'm going to be leaving the programme."

After telling viewers she thought it was "time to stop," Louise, 52, thanked them for their loyal support over the years and for watching every day.

Co-host Dan rushed to Twitter to pay tribute to Louise. Sharing a clip of her announcement, Dan wrote: "As with everything she does... Louise announces her departure from the show with dignity and class.

"We will all miss her enormously at #BBCBreakfast. She is not only wonderful at her job... she is a great friend. Enjoy your lie-ins"

One upset viewer replied: "Oh no no no - you are such a fantastic duo. It’s just the worst news during these times. We so look forward to starting the week with you two," and another tweeted: "I shed a tear, I can’t remember a time when I didn’t wake up with Louise on a morning and the both of you are a wonderful team! You will be missed"
