Louis Theroux labels popular Irish true crime podcast West Cork 'possibly the best ever'

Famous documentary maker and all-round good guy Louis Theroux has said that an Irish podcast is among the best he's ever listened too.

Theroux, who is known for his series such as 'When Louis Met' and 'Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends', is one of the most respected names in British television.

So to hear him raving about the Irish podcast West Cork is fairly sweet.

Back in 2017, he directed his followers toward the podcast, calling it his 'new favourite true-crime podcast'.

The podcast was made by Sam Bungey and Jennifer Forde and documents the murder and subsequent investigation of French woman Sophie Toscan du Plantier at her West Cork home in 1996.

Although journalist Ian Bailey was arrested twice for the murder, he has never been charged in Ireland.

Louis tweeted: "There is also a new instalment of West Cork - I haven't heard it yet but wanted to share anyway. Possibly the best ever true crime podcast."

It comes as Netflix has announced that a new documentary about the murder will launch on the streaming platform next month.

Sophie: A Murder In West Cork is one of a series of documentaries that are scheduled to be released about Sophie's murder in West Cork.

When will the Netflix series air?

Sophie: A Murder in West Cork will launch on Netflix on 30 June.

The Netflix documentary was directed by BAFTA nominee John Dower and executive produced by Suzanne Lavery and Oscar winner Simon Chinn.

In a statement about the documentary the pair said "Sophie was much more than a victim of a murder. She was a mother, a daughter, a sister, a filmmaker and a writer.

"Whatever actually happened on that cold December night in 1996, the story is one of a collision of worlds, cultures and characters and it was that which drew us to it."
