British rapper Stormzy is set to open up about how he struggled when he first rose to fame. The 29-year-old, who is from London, is the first celebrity to feature in documentarian Louis Theroux's new series - Interviews, which begins on BBC Two on Tuesday, October 25.
Discussing his rise to fame, Stormzy tells Louis that he found it a bit "overbearing" despite being proud of appearing on the cover of Time magazine in 2019 as one of the publication's next generation's leaders.
"As much as I was proud of [being on the front cover of TIME], I feel that I wasn’t in the best mind space and it was a bit overbearing,” he says as he shows the documentary presenter his extensive collection of trophies and accolades.
The multi-Brit Award winner, who has a new album out next month also discusses how, during the production of his first album in 2017, Gang Signs & Prayer, he would often go AWOL from the music studio. “It was very overwhelming to handle those things. When I was making an album, I would often crash out and get super depressed and super reclusive. I would stay at home and smoke a lot of weed," he revealed.
Stormzy also discusses the breakdown of his relationship with DJ and presenter Maya Jama, who was recently revealed to be the new Love Island presenter. The former couple were together between 2015-2019. Stormzy tells Louis that the break-up was “probably the biggest catalyst” for his growth as a person.
“It was like, OK, you made a mistake and you lose someone you loved, someone you cared for, someone who is special to you,” he explained before saying that it's "the biggest loss a man can have". He added: “There were other things in terms of mistakes I’d made. I didn’t do what a man should do to fully appreciate love, and care for his woman.”
The rapper then went on to say that, despite this, he'd love to have a family one day. “I want to get married and I want to settle. My idea of an amazing future is having my house and kinda running around and my missus there. And we’re going to eat dinner at the dinner table," he told Louis.
