Louis Saha gives credit to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick work at Manchester United

Manchester United have been told that they must build on the tenures of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick next season.

Solskjaer joined United as caretaker boss in December 2018 and, after overseeing some stellar results during that period, was offered the full-time position in March 2019. However, at the beginning of last season things soured for the Norwegian.

Following a good start with a big victory over fierce rivals Leeds, United suffered heavy defeats to Leicester City and Liverpool before falling to a new low when soon-to-be-relegated Watford beat them 4-1 in November. Solskjaer was sacked following the defeat with Rangnick given the job on an interim basis.

Having initially steadied the ship, the German struggled to inspire the squad once it became clear that he would not be leading the club next season. It had been expected that Rangnick would stay at Old Trafford in an advisory role but the club announced in May that the 63-year-old would be leaving to focus on his job as Austria's manager on a permanent basis.

Speaking to BoyleSports Premier League, former United striker Louis Saha gave credit to both Solskjaer and Rangnick. He believes that Erik ten Hag must build on his predecessors' work in 2022/23.

"If they were to regain a Champions League place next season that would be a step forward but I wouldn't expect them to win any trophies," said Saha.

"Things went forward with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The fans saw some improvement with Ralf Rangnick too but there's been situations that have been difficult for any manager to manage.

"The arrival of Erik ten Hag is a step forward. There's a lot of improvement that needs to happen with the infrastructure and Man United need the respect that the club deserves to be re-established."

Saha could have been referring to Paul Pogba when it comes to the 'difficult situations' he mentions in the Rangnick era. In his new Amazon Prime series 'Pogmentary', Pogba claims that United did not care about him despite having been offered a new contract worth £300,00 per week.
