Louis Rees-Zammit scores sensational length of field try to leave TV commentators and viewers drooling

Wales international Louis-Rees Zammit has dazzled rugby fans with a sensational solo try for club side Gloucester on the opening day of the new season.

Most of the Welsh sporting calendar has been postponed out of respect for Queen Elizabeth II, but this weekend's programme of Gallagher Premiership rugby went ahead as planned across the border.

And the Welsh winger made sure supporters at Kingsholm were given something special to cheer, producing a stunning piece of magic to get his side back into hard-fought contest with Wasps.

The visitors had taken command of the game with three unanswered converted tries before Rees-Zammit was handed the ball just metres from his own line just after the interval.

After ruthlessly exploiting a gap in the Wasps defence, the 21-year-old applied the accelerator, running the entire length of the field to escape the attentions of several defenders giving chase and go over in the corner.

It was a moment that lit up an intriguing contest between the two sides, and left BT Sport's commentary team - and watching viewers - in awe.

"He's pretty much run across the whole city of Gloucester," purred commentator Nick Mullins.

"It's a great finish under huge pressure," said his colleague Ben Kay, the former England star.

"Just look at the angle he has to run he uses every inch of the turf to be able to get to the touchline and straighten up at the end just to cross over.

"What a finish. Lee Blackett will be going absolutely bonkers because it so easily could have been a five-pointer the other way."

It was a moment that inspired a sensational comeback from the hosts, who bounced back to win the game 27-21.

And it is certainly a score that will have put a smile on the face of Wayne Pivac ahead of a huge season for his Wales team as Rees-Zammit continued where he left off in South Africa, having dazzled for his country during the summer.
