Loughnane fury at Cork star over interview comments

HURLING legend Ger Loughnane has gone in hard on Cork star Patrick Horgan.

At the launch of the League last week, Horgan had complained about being ''treated unfairly'' by the Cork management last season when he was dropped during the Championship.

To Loughnane, that was seen as an unnecessary dig at former boss Kieran Kingston.

And, according to the two-time All-Ireland winning manager, Horgan's words put pressure on Kingston's successor, Pat Ryan.

"This just confirmed my view that Horgan could be a problem for Ryan,'' writes Loughnane in his Irish Daily Star column which will appear tomorrow.

"Horgan has been around the block. He knew that what he said would make headlines.

"What would Ryan have been thinking after reading those words? Horgan had no problem effectively putting the boot into Ryan's predecessor, Kieran Kingston. "Would Ryan be thinking that this boy might be quick to pull hard on me too?"

This should be the start of a new era for Cork. Horgan's silly interview put pressure on Ryan that he didn't need.

"Last year, he was poor in a lot of games. That's why Kingston dropped him.

"By the time the Championship comes around, he'll be 35 - so he has plenty to prove.

''If he applies himself, forgets about what he did it in the past and gives proper leadership, he can be an asset to Ryan. But he has to stop making the story about himself.''
