Losses widen at Manchester United as cut in broadcasting revenue offsets rise in commercial sales

Losses widened at Manchester United during the first half of their financial year as revenue growth stalled.

New figures have revealed the Premier League club's losses totalled £20.2m in the six months to December 31, 2022, compared to losses of £16.9m in the same period in 2021.

United's total revenue also dipped slightly from £311.9m to £311m over the same time.

Commercial revenue jumped by almost 30% to £166.1m but was offset by a drop in broadcasting revenue by nearly 28% to £93.7m.

Match day revenue also fell by 4.1% to £51.2m while its adjusted EBITDA grew by 4.1% to £71.9m.

Manchester United reiterated its previous guidance that it expects to report a revenue of £590m to £610m for the full year and expects its adjusted EBITDA to be between £125m to £140m.

For the three months to the end of December 2022, the club's second quarter, total revenue dropped by almost 10% to £167.3m while it made a profit of £6.3m, up from a loss of £1.4m.

Commercial revenue for the quarter rose by 22.2% to £78.7m but broadcasting revenue was cut by 32.1% to £58.7m and match day revenue fell by 13.6% to £29.9m.

The club's adjusted EBITDA for the quarter fell by nearly 10% to £48.3m.

The results come as the club continue takeover talks with various potential buyers.
