The City of Los Angeles has agreed to pay $9.5 million to settle a lawsuit brought by the family of Melyda Corado, a 27-year-old woman who was tragically shot and killed by police during a shootout at a Trader Joe's in 2018. The incident occurred when a gunman, Gene Evin Atkins, being pursued by police, engaged in a shootout with officers inside the store where Corado was working as an assistant manager.

Corado lost her life in the crossfire during the intense exchange of gunfire. Atkins, the gunman, had a history of violence, having already shot his grandmother, kidnapped his girlfriend, and fired at officers during the pursuit that led him to the grocery store. He subsequently took multiple individuals hostage before eventually surrendering to authorities.

Following the tragic event, Corado's father and brother filed a lawsuit in November 2018, alleging civil rights violations and wrongful death. Their attorney, Neil Gehlawat, stated that Corado's death could have been prevented if the officers had adhered to proper protocol during the confrontation with the armed suspect.

Despite the findings of the Los Angeles Police Commission, which determined that the officer responsible for Corado's death did not breach department policy, the settlement reflects a recognition of the devastating loss suffered by Corado's family. The commission's report indicated that the officers' actions were deemed reasonable due to the perceived immediate threat posed by the gunman.

This settlement serves as a resolution to a tragic chapter in the city's history, highlighting the complexities and challenges faced by law enforcement in high-stress situations. While it cannot undo the loss of Melyda Corado, it represents a step towards acknowledging the impact of such incidents on affected families and communities.
