Los Angeles Dodgers beat Boston Red Sox after longest game in World Series history

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox have set a new record for the longest game in the history of baseball's World Series, after a near seven and a half hour duel.

Dodgers first baseman Max Muncy hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 18th innings to secure a 3-2 win, a full seven hours and 20 minutes after the first pitch had been thrown.

The win in LA puts the Dodgers back in the best-of-seven series, after Boston had won the first two games at Fenway Park to take a 2-0 lead in baseball's season finale.

The regulation nine innings had finished 1-1, and Boston thought they had it won when Brock Holt scored in the top of the 13th, only for the Dodgers to level. It then took until the 18th inning for Muncy's decisive homer.

The game eventually finished at 00:30 local time, less than 17 hours before game four of the series is set to begin at the same venue.

The previous record for the longest World Series stood at 14 innings, which happened on three occasions, in 1916, 2005 and 2015.
