Los Angeles-born songwriter Tori Amos opens up about her low-key life in Cornwall

Los Angeles-born musician, Tori Amos, has opened up about her low-key life in Cornwall and why she chose to move to the countryside despite being a huge musical sensation over in the US.

Tori, 59, shot to international fame over 30 years ago, but decided to swap her life in LA for a more reclusive one, moving to the UK in 1997 with her husband Mark Hawley.

He served as her front of house engineer for her 1994 Under The Pink tour and 1996 Boys For Pele album.

Cornwall Live reported that the couple currently live with their daughter, Tash, in a 300-year-old farm cottage near Bude, with an adjoining barn that they converted into their own recording studio.

Speaking to Woman's Journal about being working musicians in such a remote part of the world, Tori said that when it comes to making a record, she invites the working crew over early so everyone can settle in and get a feel for their surroundings.

She told BBC Breakfast: "It's a formidable beauty, Cornwall. With the gales blowing, if it's not a sunny day it can be a shock to us Americans. It can be brutal."

Despite claiming that they try to keep their presence "low-key" when working, Tori admitted that the record company lands their helicopter at the local rugby club, however the locals tend to laugh off the fuss.

She also went on to say that making music in Cornwall was better for her: "I wanted a place that didn’t have all the crazy anticipations that go with the music business - when I walk into the studios in LA, I can smell the fear.

"Often in LA, the studio’s fear is greater than their faith - bless their cotton socks.

"But when I’m in Cornwall the record company never crosses me. There’s a real positive energy force."

For Tori, being surrounded by positive energy is something that is important to her.

She said: "I’m obsessed by the sea. Our house is surrounded by farmland, but when you walk out of the front door you can glimpse the sea at nearby Widemouth Bay. I have to know the sea is there."

She said to ITV : "I have one foot in the west country and one foot in the States. I've fallen in love with the land and the people here. There's something very unique about this land. It's captured my heart really."
