Lorry jackknifes amid arctic weather conditions as cops close busy Scots road

An HGV lorry has jackknifed on the A702, causing the road to be shut down to motorists.

Road cops were alerted to the lorry blocking the road on Saturday December 10, on the A702 near Easter Howgate in Midlothian. Officers announced just before 3pm they closed off the road while the vehicle is recovered with diversions in place.

Traffic Scotland issued an update and said all lanes were restricted on the A702 near Mauricewood Turn.

Police Scotland posted on Twitter and said road closures 'remain in place' this afternoon on the A702.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Dalkeith Road Police attended a report of a lorry that was obstructing the A702 near Easter Howgate this morning.

"The lorry is still in situ and temporary road closures have been implemented to allow for recovery of the vehicle, which is on going."

Meanwhile, three cars were believed to have skidded on black ice and ended up in ditches on the A9 at Kincriag, just south of Aviemore this morning.

However, speaking to the Record earlier, Police Scotland confirmed no-one had been hurt in any of these accidents.

The Met Office say travel disruption from the severe weather could last until Monday and warn that some rural communities might suffer power cuts.

A yellow warning for snow and ice is in place for much of Scotland until 12pm on Sunday, with temperatures set to go as low as minus 10C (14F).

The warnings cover parts of the central belt, Edinburgh and the Lothians, Fife, Tayside, Perthshire, the north east, the Highlands, the Western Isles and Shetland.
