The vehicle however, was totalled. The top of the lorry was ripped off after the driver mistakenly thought they could squeeze it under the bridge which is 10ft off the road.

The bridge came off better, only suffering “superficial scratches”, according to Network Rail. No train services were affected as a result of the smash. A spokesperson told us that they surveyed the site to check for damage but were content that there was none.

Police were in attendance to assist with the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 10.15am on Friday, 15 July, we were called to a report of a truck hitting a bridge in Greenhill Road, Paisley. The road was closed and re-opened around 11.30am. The driver has been issued with a fixed penalty notice.”

A spokesperson from Evri, the new name for Hermes, said: "We can confirm that one of our agency drivers has been involved in an incident today. Fortunately the driver is unhurt.

"We take incidents like this very seriously and we have launched an investigation. The road has reopened and it has been confirmed that there is no structural damage to the bridge so trains are running as normal too.

"We apologise for any inconvenience.”

According to data from Network Rail in 2020, the Greenhill Road bridge was one of the most bashed in the UK.

Network Rail ranked the Greenhill Road crossing 14th on its league of shame after nine separate incidents were reported there between 2019/20.
