Lorry devastated by blaze near the M56

A lorry carrying 20 tons of household recycling caught fire on a road close to the M56 in the early hours of Friday.

At 6.42am, crews from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service received reports of a "large vehicle fire" in a layby off the M56, near Ellesmere Port. Multiple fire engines arrived at the scene to find a lorry carrying "20 tons of household recycling" on fire.

Firefighters used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire and the load from the lorry's container was emptied onto the carriageway. Only one fire engine remains at the scene currently.

Highway officers were also called to the scene and police have closed the road while the scene is cleared, reports Cheshire Live.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said : "Firefighters are currently at the scene of a large vehicle fire on the A5117 in a layby just prior to the M56.

"Two hose reel jets and breathing apparatus are in use to extinguish the fire in a lorry trailer containing around 20 tons of household recycling.

"Highways have been asked to attend as truck waste is being emptied onto the carriageway and will need clearing. The incident is being reduced to one fire engine and police have closed the road."
