Lorraine viewers hits out after male guest brought on to talk about issue on IWD

The Mayor of London featured on daytime television show Lorraine this morning to discuss the issue of support for the menopause in the average workplace - but viewers weren't happy.

Scottish host Lorraine Kelly discussed the support needed for those who deal with the menopause in the average workplace with her guest Sadiq Khan.

Speaking on the programme, Sadiq said: "We're going to make sure that women feel confident asking for support. That could be adjusting the temperatures in the workplaces, having breaks during the course of the day, having time off work to go and see their doctors.

"What I don't want is talented staff, talented people feeling embarrassed talking about it. You should not feel embarrassed because I am.

"It's not your job to stop me being embarrassed. We have to talk about this and make sure, at a simple level, that you do the right thing, and on a second level, you keep the talent you have, which are our female staff."

Viewers took to social media to slate the broadcasting channel on their choice of guest on International Women's Day, with on Tweet reading: "Why am I watching Sadiq Khan talk about the menopause on #Lorraine

"The man cannot organise a p*** up in a brewery….I’m done!!"

Another tweet read: "I feel someone with more than a basic knowledge should have spoken about menopause in the workplace on #lorraine and left @MayorofLondon #sadiqkhan to focus on reforming the police, tfl, knife crime, increasing energy prices… the list goes on! #doyourjob #ultimatum."

Another said: "Up next @SadiqKhan discusses the menopause…………….. For the sake of good taste I’ll avoid the obvious comparisons lol!! #lorraine"

A fourth user said: "International Women's Day and #lorraine gets a man on to talk about menopause."

Other Twitter users were unhappy about the lack of diversity in guests, with one tweet reading: "#lorraine not one woman of colour represented today- shameful."

One Twitter user, however, was full of praise for the Mayor of London's appearance on the show, saying: "Sadiq Khan on TV explaining the importance of men checking their behaviour and emphasising that women and girls shouldn’t need to change theirs. Finally, someone higher up getting it AND explaining it publicly. #Lorraine"

Lorraine airs every weekday on ITV from 9am onwards, and can be caught up on STV Player from 10am.
