Lorraine Kelly slams 'unfair' wedding restrictions by 'hypocritical' government

Lorraine Kelly has called out the "unfair" restrictions that remain in place for weddings in England, despite the same rules not applying to other events.

Weddings recently faced a limit on guests due to coronavirus guidelines, with only 30 people allowed to attend.

That has since changed, but due to the June 21 lifting of all social distancing being pushed back by the government because of a rise in cases, some guidelines remain.

From having to wear masks when leaving a table, and only being able to drink at said tables, the biggest rule is guests are not allowed to dance.

Despite this, events such as the Euro 2020 football matches and even test gigs are allowed to go ahead, with huge crowds of people able to gather with few if restrictions, if any at all.

Just this weekend, people attending football celebrations in London or visiting the stadium where the England vs Scotland match took place were shown dancing around together, drinking, and not wearing masks or following social distancing.

But more than this, government figures including Prime Minister Boris Johnson have been seen to be exempt from the rules they have imposed on England.

From minister garden parties and the recent G7 leaders having drinks together, Johnson and the government have been called "hypocrites" for disallowing wedding guests to enjoy the same lift of restrictions that they have.

Dr Hilary Jones called the move "hypocritical", with Lorraine backing this by calling the rules for those with weddings soon "unfair".

She said: "The government's rules about weddings. Now, the poor brides and the wedding industry as well there's a lot of jobs relying on this, and they've accused the government of being complete hypocrites."

Hilary asked: "Why are they exempt from the same rules they impose on the rest of the country? Unfortunately it is hypocritical, and it's not a good way to show what we should be doing.

"They're the ones we should be looking up to and following, but it is not a good example."

He went on: "People can't drink at the bar, they have to sit at tables to have a drink which is not so much fun, they've got to social distance and they can't dance.

"It is a shame, especially because of what has been going on in the crowds at the football."

Lorraine called out the wedding restrictions, saying: "You've got to dance at a wedding, for God's sake. It is a shame."

Hilary added: "When you see those crowds of people and at weddings they say you can't dance, there's a discrepancy there which is just irrational."

Lorraine agreed: "It's not fair, you can understand why they are calling the government hypocritical in that sense.

"We did ask Downing Street for a quote but they haven't got back to us... but we did say to them come on, give us an answer here, a lot of people want to do that."

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
