Lorraine Kelly found herself in an awkward situation on live television after making an unintended remark that came off as an ‘insult’ to Good Morning Britain presenter Ed Balls. During a morning segment, Lorraine, 65, joined GMB hosts Susanna Reid, 54, and Ed, 57, to preview her upcoming show, which featured decluttering expert Dilly Carter from Stacey Solomon’s Sort Your Life Out.
The discussion naturally turned to the idea of organizing wardrobes and selling unworn clothes. As the conversation progressed, Lorraine asked, “And looking at your wardrobe, how many clothes do you actually wear?” before elaborating, “You know the way that I’ve got a fat wardrobe and a thin wardrobe.”
Susanna, curious about the unusual terminology, inquired, “What’s a fat wardrobe and a thin wardrobe?” Attempting to clarify, Lorraine explained, “A fat wardrobe is like the kaftan type things… you know, big things.” She gestured with her hands as she spoke, while Susanna looked perplexed by the explanation, reports Bristol Live.
Sensing the confusion, Lorraine tried to make the conversation relatable by saying, “You know when you’re feeling a bit fat.” Then, turning to Ed, she added, “Ed knows what I’m talking about.” As the studio reacted in surprise, Ed initially played along but soon realized the conversation had taken an uncomfortable turn. Lorraine, visibly flustered, quickly tried to backtrack, saying, “Ohh no, I don’t mean that, no. Just because you’re a fashion….” before trailing off.
Jumping in to save the moment, Ed good-naturedly responded, “I have a fat wardrobe, and then I go on a diet, and I try and use my thin wardrobe. When it doesn’t work, I go back to my fat wardrobe.” Relieved, Lorraine responded, “Thank you! See, he looked me in the eye, and I just knew that he knew what I was talking about, which is always a good thing because it doesn’t always happen.”
As the conversation turned lighthearted, Susanna couldn’t hold back her laughter, while Ed, in a playful jab, admitted, “I’m bailing you out now. I don’t have a fat wardrobe—I just said that to avoid embarrassment.” Lorraine, now blushing, attempted to pivot away from the gaffe, saying, “Boys do though, everybody does.” Wrapping up the moment, she concluded, “Anyway, we’ll talk about that with Dilly Carter, who is back to Sort Your Life Out.”
As the segment ended, Lorraine sheepishly admitted, “I shall go away and think about what I’ve said.”
