Lorraine Kelly in tears as Strictly star Nikita pleads for help over Ukraine crisis

Lorraine Kelly was moved as she spoke to Strictly Come Dancing star Nikita Kuzmin about the Ukraine crisis.

On today's broadcast of ITV's Lorraine (Thursday March 3), the Scottish host discussed the war in Ukraine and heard from Nikita via video call from Germany.

Nikita, who's from Ukraine and danced with Tilly Ramsay on the latest season of Strictly, has been staying in Germany while some of his family remains in Ukraine.

While Nikita was speaking to Lorraine, he admitted he was just trying to "keep it together".

He said: “It’s absolutely heartbreaking. Even now, hearing the reports I’m trying to contain myself.

“But it’s so inspiring to see Ukrainian people fight.

“Russia is not fighting just against the Ukrainian army but the whole of Ukraine.”

Lorraine looked like she welled up as she gasped while Nikita shared that his grandmother, who is in Kyiv, is doing all she can to stop the rest of the family from worrying.

"She's actually trying to protect us from being scared and every time we can hear gun shots or explosions in the background, she is always telling us it's a movie she put on the TV", he said.

"And only hours later she's confessing that they were real bombs, real gunshots."

The dancer then went on to plead for help as Lorraine asked what we-people in the UK and watching at home- can do to help.

“First, if you can donate to the National Bank of Ukraine, which is helping the army.”

In terms of donations, he suggests people donate clothes, batteries and power banks to their nearest drop off points that will then be sent over to Ukraine.

He also added that there is a need for insulin and needles for those who have diabetes.

Nikita was praised on Strictly after he proudly showed off his his glucose monitor on his arm and raised awareness for Type 1 diabetes.

And speaking directly to the camera, he pleaded for help.

"Please help us.

“They are bombing everything right now. We need help.

“Message hospitals, if you can accept some of the Ukrainian children in need of help, please help by contacting Ukrainian hospitals.”
