Lorraine guest 'screamed down phone' after being offered history-making TV gig

A kids television show host has made history by becoming the first presenter on CBeebies with Downs Syndrome - revealing the excitement of the job offer on Lorraine this morning.

George Webster, 21, first received the exciting news in September 2021 that he would be working on the popular children's TV programme, CBeebies.

Speaking to Christine Lampard on Lorraine this morning, George said: "I got the phone call from one of the main producers at CBeebies, and as she offered me the job, I was just screaming down the phone, I was so excited!

"Becoming the very first presenter on the show with Downs Syndrome is a really big achievement not only for me, but for so many others like me."

George also explained that the role was also important as he grew up without representation in the media of people with Downs Syndrome, so he wanted to be the one to break the stigma and change that statistic.

George continued: "I really want to change this, because there wasn't really a lot of representation back when I was a lot younger, and the world still does need to change as we are people, and we exist in this space as well.

"We deserve equal respect, and I want people like me to also respect themselves more too."

Host Christine spoke on her daughter watching shows on CBeebies like Mr Tumble, and noted that at the age of kids watching these programmes, is the perfect time to be speaking about different types of people with all different abilities and so on.

George has also kickstarted a campaign called The Mythbusters, which involves a group of people with all different types of learning disabilities who aim to break the stigma surrounding people with disabilities in the media.

Speaking on this, George said: "In the last year, only 42 per cent of children aged between two and five years old were aware of other children and adults in the wider media with learning disabilities.

"We want this to change, and we all deserve equal respect and opportunities."

George's dad Rob was also on the show, and spoke about his son's positive attitude towards everything in life - but also touched on how this could be a stereotype of people with the disability.

Rob said: "He's just a complete bundle of energy, and is really positive most of the time - but one of the myths surrounding people with Downs Syndrome is that they are happy all the time - but that's not always true!

"George has his moments, as we all do, but he is generally a really positive person, and a fearless one too.

"He just works really hard and is very courageous, he will take anything on and work with it.

"Once he has said he is going to go ahead and do something, that I'd maybe be unsure if he was capable of, he'd be away smashing it - he's just such a positive light in our lives."

Christine also spoke on Rob and his wife's ambition to show George that anything is possible, and to always push your children to be their best version of themselves.

Rob added: "I mean, everyone is proud of their kids, and I think we were always of the opinion that we shouldn't constrain our expectations on what George could achieve.

"To be honest, when George was born, we did ask the doctors what we should be expecting as George gets older and they said 'Who knows?', which is so true because who really does?

"I just hope that with George being on CBeebies and on stage and in film, they see what I see - George for who he is, not just a person with Downs Syndrome."

George is also part of the cast of The Railway Children Return, releasing in 2022, and he starred alongside famous actresses Sheridan Smith and Jenny Agutter.

George noted that this was a pivotal moment in his career, stating: "I have to pinch myself often when I think of that, it is so amazing."

The young presenter is also passionate about dancing, and revealed that he would love to either host or present Strictly Come Dancing.

He added: "That would be the dream, to either perform or host - or why not both?

"I absolutely love Strictly, I'd love to be on the show, so who knows?"

You can watch George on CBeebies every other Friday, and there is also a CBeebies special being planned with George alongside his childhood hero, Mr Tumble.
