Loris Karius deal being worked on by Newcastle boss Eddie Howe after impressive Saudi display

Eddie Howe admits he wants to keep Loris Karius for the second half of the season with Newcastle United now in talks with the German star's representatives to hold on to the ex-Besiktas man.

Karius was in sensational form in the first half against Al-Hilal as he kept out the home side during their spell on top of the exhibition game in Riyadh. Now, the Toon boss wants to sit down and extend his stay on Tyneside.

Speaking last night in the bowels of the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium, Howe told reporters: "We’ll wait and see. I would like him to stay, but obviously the two parties have got to agree, so fingers crossed.

“I think he’s been a very calming influence. "He’s a goalkeeper with a lot of experience. He’s trained well. He’s a very good character.

"He’s very popular in the changing room, the lads have really taken to him. He’s a positive influence, and that’s why I’d like him to stay."

With Nick Pope still on international duty with England and expected to get a period of rest after the tournament, Karius is vying with Karl Darlow to play against AFC Bournemouth in the League Cup later this month.
