Loreen's nails go viral as Eurovision viewers worry she was going to injure herself

She may have won the Eurovision song contest 2023 with the best tune - but the thing most people will remember most about Loreen’s entry will be her incredible nails. Some people suggested she had ‘nailed’ her performance and others were worried that she was going to do herself an injury.

It was the main topic of debate on Twitter - and it was also revealed that they were in fact made out of stone. Jono Read said: “Say what you like about Sweden but Loreen NAILS it #Eurovision” wiwibloggs explained: “Loreen says her nail extensions are made of stone and were meant to add to the natural, organic vibe of her stage show.”

Annie Mole joked: “The moment Loreen aka Nine Inch Nails won #Eurovision for the 2nd time. #Eurovision2023 was clearly err, nail biting Next year Sweden will host #Eurovision. When I saw Nine Inch Nails was trending, I genuinely thought it was referring to Sweden & Loreen’s manicure #Eurovision #Eurovision2023.”

Georgie Heath added: “Thinking about Loreen’s dedicated “nails remover” and hoping they got the credit they deserve. Update on Monday’s show please.” J_Motorcast_ warned: “Every time Sweden’s performer Loreen at the #Eurovision2023 grand final put her hands to her face I thought she was about to blind herself. Careful with those nails, honey.”

Sweden’s Loreen stormed to victory on the night, making history as the first woman and second person to win the song competition twice after her win in 2012. She scored a total of 583 points after the public and jury votes were combined, narrowly beating Finland’s Kaarija who scored 526.

The win also ties her native Sweden with Ireland as the nation with the most wins, with seven apiece. She said: “This is overwhelming. I’m so happy and I’m so thankful.”

Her nails were also featured in the #DrawEurovision trend on Twitter sees artists create quick paintings and sketches of the acts as they perform onstage, with watercolours, pens and digital software all used to create their artworks.

Professional cartoonist and illustrator Dan Berry, from Shropshire, depicted Loreen as Marvel’s Wolverine in tribute to the long nails she wore in her performance.

“I think I was one of the instigators of the #draweurovision hashtag,” Mr Berry said. “It’s a fun drawing challenge, trying to get each act drawn while they perform.

“It’s challenging and stressful, but a lot of fun.”
