The pop girlies are coming together to support Chappell Roan, and Lorde has gone out of her way to make sure the “HOT TO GO!” singer can cope with her catapult to fame.
In a new interview with The Face, Roan opened up about how the “Royals” singer saved her from a terrifying situation that reminded her of a toxic relationship.
After arriving at an airport at 5.30am in the morning, Roan was accosted by two men trying to force her to sign posters. She said she knew they weren’t fans, and after she had refused, one man followed her to the TSA line while yelling at her.
“I feel like fame is just abusive. The vibe of this — stalking, talking shit online, [people who] won’t leave you alone, yelling at you in public — is the vibe of an abusive ex-husband. That’s what it feels like. I didn’t know it would feel this bad,” Roan declared.
While crying in an airport bathroom after the altercation, she texted Lorde for support. And boy, did the “Green Light” singer deliver.
“She sent me a list of things I should do [in that situation]. Literally wrote down eight things she wished someone would have told her when she was going through it,” she recalled.
“And she went through fucking hell. She was a baby!”
Roan also admitted if fame becomes too much, she might step away from music altogether.
“I told myself, if this ever gets dangerous, I might quit. It’s dangerous now, and I’m still going. But that part is not what I signed up for,” she told The Face.
There are similarities between Roan and Lorde’s career progression — both had singles that went bonkers — and Lorde was just 17 when she won a Grammy for “Royals”. If you look at past interviews with Lorde, they’re definitely kindred spirits.
“I’m great at my job, but I’m not sure I’m the man for the job. I’m a highly sensitive person. I’m not built for pop star life. To have a public-facing existence is something I find really intense and is something I’m not good at,” Lorde told Vogue in 2021.
In another interview with the WSJ in the same year, she was pleasantly surprised when paparazzi didn’t recognise her in Los Angeles.
“To be able to have this huge amount of respect, but also still have my life, and not be so famous that my quality of life is disturbed — that’s the dream,” she said at the time.
Roan could take a leaf out of Lorde’s book and go into hibernation between album cycles, to refresh and recover from the pressures of fame. As long as she keeps making music, real fans will allow her to do whatever she needs to keep creating.
