Lord Lieutenancy of Dumfries appoints two new deputies

Community champion Hardip Atwal, above, who was awarded a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours, has been appointed one of two new deputy Lord Lieutenants of Dumfries.

The Annan businessman, 46, runs a grocery store and award-winning post office. He is also a wedding banquet manager and a special police constable.

A former Annan Academy pupil, Hardip has been widely recognised for his work in the community and raising money for local charities.

He will take on the role along with Lord David Patrick Wentworth Hope Johnstone who runs his family estate of Raehills near Lockerbie.

Lord Johnstone is involved in all matters to do with the countryside and is a former Chairman of Scottish Land and Estates, a group which represents landowners and rural businesses right across Scotland.

Lord Lieutenant of Dumfries Fiona Armstrong said she is “delighted to have two well-known businessmen joining the team”.

She added: “Both bring different skills and will do an excellent job in serving the Queen and the community.”
