The Loose Women studio descended into furious debate for the second day running on Wednesday afternoon, as the panellists discussed Meghan Markle ’s latest tell-all interview.
Host Jane Moore was joined on the panel by Sophie Morgan, Kelle Bryan and Janet Street-Porter as they discussed the former actress’s comparison of her wedding with Prince Harry to Nelson Mandela being freed from prison.
The former Suits actress recalled an encounter she had at the 2019 London premiere with an actor from South Africa who made a comparison to her wedding with Prince Harry and Nelson Mandela.
Panellists Jane and Janet took issue with the comparison, but Kelle defended Meghan’s comments, resulting in a loud clash in the ITV studio.
The conversation turned heated as the focus turned to Meghan’s comments about her two children Archie Harrison and Lilibet Diana and the lives they could have led in the UK.
Janet said to Kelle: “You seem to be implying that the British people by default would think less of her son and think badly of her son because he’s a person of colour and mixed race.”
Kelle hit back insisting: “That's her experience. She said within the royal household people have made comments about her son as a person of colour.
“If that’s the first representation she’s had, what’s she thinking about as a wider community outside. Racism is something we deal with on a daily basis.”
Jane then said: “There’s racism in America as well though,” to which Kelle agreed there was.
Janet then stepped in and said: “What I find ironic is that she left this country because she complained of having her privacy invaded and she’s crossed to another continent where now in the space of a week we’ve had two podcasts and a 6,000 word interview.”
Kelle then raised the “confines” on Meghan’s life while a part of the royal family, as she had to shout over her fellow panellists to say: “She couldn’t receive her mail without somebody else reading it.”
The panel then inexplicably burst into laughter at the comment, as Janet said: “I think I'm not allowed to receive my mail on this show without someone reading it.”
Kelle then tried to regain the conversation as she interjected: “Hang on a second, wait,” before Sophie finally piped up to weigh in on the conversation.
She scathingly said: “It’s just so boring talking about Meghan Markle – but I get all the points raised.”
She continued: “We’re pulling out things that’s being said. It's a shame when she knows she’s being scrutinised for things she says that she still says things that potentially detract from her agenda.
“She wants to manage her voice and her truth, but she should be aware she compares herself to Mandela, it’s going to get scrutinised.”
