Loose Women's Gloria Hunniford changed 'sweet tooth' diet after health warning

Gloria Hunniford was inspired to make some drastic changes her diet after being diagnosed as pre-diabetic.

The TV presenter, 81, has a career spanning more than four decades and is a regular panelist on ITV's lunch time talk show Loose Women.

Gloria also showcased her singing skills after taking part in The Masked Singer under the disguise of the Snow Leopard.

Whilst she evidently still has a lot of energy and is fearless when it comes to challenging herself, Gloria has previously suggested that her health has been of concern in the past, particularly at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

As reported by the Express, she told the Belfast Telegraph in early 2020 that she was "classified as pre-diabetic," with her adding that she would be "cautious" in the pandemic.

She has previously spoken about receiving the diagnosis, which prompted the TV presenter to alter her lifestyle in a bid to prevent developing type 2 diabetes in around 2013.

Writing in a column for the Mirror in 2016, she said it was during an annual blood test three years earlier that her doctor had informed her that she was pre-diabetic.

The term means that the patient's "blood sugars are higher than usual, but not high enough" to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, according to the leading charity Diabetes UK.

Gloria said: "[My doctor] told me to take my life in my hands." She admitted that she had a "sweet tooth," with the warning encouraging her to cut out chocolate, for example.

She said: "I cut out all the sugar I could." The TV presenter added in the column: "Inside six weeks, my GP ran another test and said, for my age, I had achieved the best reading."

A doctor later advised her to also cut out carbohydrates "because they turn into sugar in the body." She further commented: "So I gave up bread, pasta and potatoes."

And in an earlier interview with the Daily Record, she said that her high blood sugar reading came as a "huge shock," though she was determined to prevent developing diabetes.

She admitted that she was "nervous" of the condition, which had affected her late sister Lena. Following the warning, Gloria adopted a low-sugar and low-carb diet.

The Strictly Come Dancing alum shared details of her diet in the column for the Mirror in 2016. She said it included an egg or sausage for breakfast, but without any bread.

Lunch would be soup or a salad with fish. She would replace potatoes with caulifower in evening meals. She said instead of sugary snacks she would have cheese, nuts or milk.

Diabetes UK states that pre-diabetes means an individual is at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, though they are "unlikely" to be experiencing any symptoms at that point.

It has said there are around 13 million people at increased risk of type 2 diabetes in the UK. Pre-diabetes is a "warning sign" because the individual doesn't have the condition yet.

It said: "By making changes to diet, increasing physical activity and losing weight, about half of type 2 diabetes cases can be prevented or delayed in some people."
