Loose Women fans distracted by Spice Girl Mel C's 'unusual' accent

Spice Girl's Mel C appeared on Loose Women to discuss her new book today - but fans were distracted.

The pop idol, known as Sporty Spice, seemed to be overly enunciating her words as she spoke to the ITV show's panellists. She spoke of her days in the 90's pop band, as she performed alongside Emma Bunton, Mel B, Geri Halliwell and Victoria Beckham.

But as she was speaking, fans couldn't quite put their finger on her unusual accent. They took to Twitter to question why she was "speaking like that".

One user said: "I cant BARE Mel C why is she talking like that #Loosewomen".

Lorraine said: "Why does @MelanieCmusic sound so nicey nicey sickly sweet?" Craig said: "She tries to put a posh voice on, she's been doing it for years! It's Ridiculous #Loosewomen." Another user added: "That fake posh accent Mel C tries to put on."

But other fans had the Spice Girls' back as they explained what could be causing the change in accent. One user said: "Unfortunately, when people with strong northern accents are media trained, they’re often told to tone it down. Especially when they’re an international celebrity as people outside the UK might find it difficult to understand what they’re saying."

Another added: "You do realise she has lived down south 3/4 of her life don’t ya? #bekind."

Mel C is originally from Whiston in Knowsley but went on to grow up in Widnes. After school, she moved to London for college but the star has travelled the world since her singing career kicked off, meaning that she has probably adapted new dialect over the years.
