If you’re a few days into the new year and you’re already desperate to get away somewhere warm, then you are not alone. February, especially over the half term, is the perfect time to get away.

Newcastle Airport offers many destinations for a summer getaway. Whether you fancy the luxuries of Dubai or the far reaches of Europe, there’s something to suit all tastes.

Alicante

Sitting just a three-hour flight from Newcastle, Alicante is an ideal destination for those looking for a bit of R&R. Gorgeous beaches, stunning scenery and typically very few rainy days make for the perfect surroundings for a week of relaxation.

Flights to Alicante leave Newcastle Airport on three days a week during winter, rising to every day during the summer. Fly with Ryanair, Jet2 or Tui all-year-round.

Malaga

Well-known and a very popular destination, Malaga mixes relaxing sandy beaches with rich Spanish culture. It’s got tonnes of history to deep into as well as a thriving nightlife scene that will ensured you’re entertained.

Flights from Newcastle depart three times a week with Jet2 and Ryanair during the winter season.

Barcelona

For those who love the bustle of a city, Barcelona is a bucket list destination. Temperatures aren’t as lush as the more southern coasts, but ranges from nine to 16 degrees.

Ryanair recently began offering winter flights direct to Barcelona from Newcastle, so it’s a direct trip - but only until March. Flights depart and return on a Tuesday and a Saturday so head out for a long weekend or enjoy a mid-week trip.

Majorca

Don’t discount this top summer getaway out when you’re considering a winter break. The Mediterranean island may not reach the highs of its July temperatures of 30C, but we wouldn’t turn down the comfy 15C you can expect in February.

There’s more than enough to do in the capital of Palma to fill up a holiday for those who prefer to be on the go, while the relaxers among you may find its world-famous beach resorts are more up your street.

Canary Islands (Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote)

If you choose to visit any of the seven Canary Islands, you’re in for a fun holiday. It’s especially great to take the kids as most resorts cater to families and if you’re in Tenerife, there’s a fabulous opportunity to venture up its towering volcano, Mount Teide.

Temperatures are more forgiving thanks to its southerly location. Expect to sunbathe in lows of 14C and highs in the mid 20s.

Passport rules for Spain

Before you do book a last-minute trip, make sure that you check your passport before travelling. For trips to Spain, your passport must be issued less than 10 years before the date you entered the country and be valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave.
