The 30 Greatest Shows of the SFX Era

SFX is marking its 30th anniversary this year, and we’re doing various things to mark the occasion. This month we’ve enlisted the help of friends of the mag – including writers, directors and producers of some of your favourite series – to pick out 30 of the greatest TV series to air since our first issue hit WH Smith. Contributors include AC Bradley (What If...?), Chris Chibnall (Doctor Who), Russell T Davies (Doctor Who), Mark Gatiss (A Ghost Story for Christmas), Kate Herron (Loki), Soo Hugh (The Terror), Lisa Joy (Westworld), Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead), Mark Millar (Kick-Ass), Steven Moffat (Doctor Who), Doug Naylor (Red Dwarf), Simon Racioppa (Invincible), Toby Whithouse (Being Human)... and plenty more.

Mickey 17

Robert Pattinson plays the down-on-his-luck Mickey in Mickey 17, who signs up to become a disposable clone worker, printed out again each time he meets a sticky end on a dangerous mission – and ends up existing in two versions simultaneously. Oops. We find out more from Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho and both his leads.

The Wheel of Time

The fantasy show based on Robert Jordan’s massively popular books returns to Prime Video for a third season soon. We visit the set in South Africa and speak to showrunner Rafe Judkins and cast members Rosamund Pike, Daniel Henney and Josha Stradowski.

The Electric State

The Russo Brothers’ latest movie is an adaptation of Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel, set after a robot uprising. We talk to both Anthony and Joe (as well as co-writer Stephen McFeely) about bringing its post-apocalyptic world to life.

Designing Section 31

In our latest feature showcasing the work of behind-the-scenes bods, we learn all about the Emperor’s new clothes (and Alok’s, and Quasi’s, and... oh, you get the idea) from Star Trek costume designer Gersha Phillips.

Death Line

This issue’s retrospective takes a look back at 1972’s Death Line – a tale of cannibalistic horror in the bowels of the London Underground – in the company of director Gary Sherman.

And that’s not all feature-wise. We also round up everything we know about the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, and profile TV writer-turned-author James Alistair Henry.

Red Alert

And the big features are just the tip of the iceberg! As ever, our news section, Red Alert, is crammed with insights into yet more movies, TV shows, comics and books. In the spotlight this month: George RR Martin adaptation In The Lost Lands; Ghost Stories creators Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson’s new play; and the latest Fantastic Four, Doctor Strange, ThunderCats and Dracula comics.
