Long standing Edinburgh takeaway announces closure 'with a heavy heart'

A city centre takeaway that's been serving the city for over 30 years has announced their closure.

The Baked Potato Shop, which sits on Cockburn Street, updated customers with a post on social media. They've said the cost of living crisis has made it impossible for them to continue, and they'll be turning the ovens off on April 23.

Posting to Facebook, they said: "It is with a heavy heart that today we announce the permanent retirement of The Baked Potato Shop. It has been an absolute honour to carry on the shop’s good name for so many years but unfortunately with the cost of living as it is, it is no longer possible for us to continue.

"As of the end of the 23rd of April our ovens will go silent for the final time. We want to send out a great big thank you to all of our customers from over the years especially those of you who have been returning to us for yonks. Live long and potato!"

Fans of the eatery were quick to express their disappointment. Paul Anderson said: "My favourite place when I lived in Edinburgh many many years ago. I still would go when I visited. Sad to hear this news, I wish you well for the future and thank you for the years of baked spuds."

Ani Black agreed: "Damn. I have so much love for your shop, even though it's been ages since I was there, and always hoped to get back.

"But it's really hard right now to run an independent business. Best of luck to you all. Like other folks have said, I hope you feel inclined to share your recipes. It won't be the same as going there, of course, but it would be a real treat."

Lynn Wardrop had similar feelings, adding: "This is so sad and to see the cost of living impacting another small business that is part of the city!

"Your baked tatties were the best, good luck for the future."
