Long Island fire: One woman dead and seven injured as fire rips through house

One woman died and another seven people were hospitalised after a fire erupted at the home where they were staying.

Emergency services rushed to put out the flames that wrapped a home near Herricks, on Long Island, New York state.

Authorities said that most of the people that were injured in the fire were treated for smoke inhalation.

The woman, whose body was found inside the home, was identified as Kashmira Patel.

The circumstances under which the fire broke out have not been determined as of yet.

Shocking footage from the scene shows the house completely immersed in the blaze and thick smoke plummeting from the menacing flames.

A family member of the people who were inside the home said that all of the people were in town from India for the funeral of another family member who passed away last week.

Pictures from the scene after the blaze was put out show the property completely destroyed and the charred structure of the house.

Authorities said the fire broke out at around 3am local time (8am BST).

60 firefighters worked to get the blaze under control, while traffic has been stopped at the surrounding streets as officials investigate the scene.

Seven people were rushed to a hospital and although their condition is not confirmed as of yet, authorities say that some of them have been released.

Authorities initially reported that one woman is unaccounted for after the incident until her body was found inside the home.

An investigation to determine the cause of the fire is ongoing.

Firefighters used a drone over the wreckage to try to find Patel, whose body was eventually found inside the home, according to the family.

The family told PIX11 News it was angry it took so long to put out the fire.

Nassau County firefighters said they arrived at the scene quickly but their efforts were hampered by a broken fire hydrant and a live wire. The fire was contained in about 90 minutes, leaving nothing but bricks and ashes.
