The route involves both a train and a ferry.
Take the train south along the coast as far as Wicklow before it turns inland and stops at the estuary of the river Slaney.
From there, make your way to Rosslare port and hop on one of the twice-weekly ferries to Bilbao in Basque Country.
It takes approximately 30 hours to get to Bilbao from Rosslare.
Once in the Basque country, it's another five hours on the train to the Spanish capital, Madrid.
There are plenty of potential stop-offs recommended by Lonely Planet, including the former Spanish capital, Valladolid.
Dublin to Madrid wasn't the only route included in this list from Lonely Planet.
Other notable journeys include Venice to Palermo, Amsterdam to Vienna, Paris to Berlin, Bastia to Ajaccio, Budapest to Split, Paris to Barcelona, Locarno to Domodossola through the Swiss Alps and Loop the Loop in north Wales.
