Lone Star Skirmish! Texas State Bobcats Take On #12 Texas A&M Aggies
Texas earns its root’n toot’n reputation as the Sun Belt opens the season against the SEC (a little known conference) for an in-state donnybrook.

The Bobcats are done being gridiron trash. At least, it appears that Texas State Athletic Director Larry Teis is finally committed to pulling the program out of the Sun Belt Basement and into the light of victory (non-moral variety). No better opportunity to underscore this renewed dedication to excellence than with a triumphant upset over #12 Texas A&M tonight.
The Nation’s Youngest Team Grows Up
A couple years ago, then head coach Everett Withers led an abnormal number of freshman to their pigskin demise, absorbing loss after brutal loss to more experienced teams. But now the roster has matured to become the 2nd most experienced in the nation (according to Phil Steele), but fans no longer have Withers to thank for it. New head coach Jake Spavital brings the air raid to San Marcos.
Will the Air Raid Bomb?
Tyler Vitt, who started the majority of game for the Bobcats last season, re-won the starting job over Fullerton College transfer Gresch Jensen this fall. Vitt lost all nine games he appeared in last season, but he did something to impress Spavital, who is expected to unleash the air raid upon unsuspecting opponents. In 2018, Vitt tossed 7 TDs against 10 picks, so let’s hope Spavital has cracked Vitt’s cheat code before facing A&M.
Bobcats Have a Deceptively Good Defense
Bryan London II, who has played linebacker for the Bobcats since 1998, headlines a defensive squad some have said to up in the upper tier of the Sun Belt. Last season, the squad improved from 102 in the nation to 53 (5th in the Belt), which is a pretty huge jump. The linebackers are the studs here, with London and Nik Daniels leading a ridiculous number of seniors.
Final Analysis
I don’t know much about Texas A&M except they used to be in the Big 12. However, the Associated Press seems to think highly of their roster, so I suspect they pose a challenge to a Bobcats team that finished 3-9 last season. That said, I have a good feeling about Spavital and the energy that seems to have jolted Larry Teis back to life. Thursday could be a big win for the Bobcats, even if it’s only a moral one.
