London weather: Capital to be hotter than Barcelona as glorious start to March continues

London is set to be hotter than Barcelona this week with the capital potentially enjoying a whole week of uninterrupted sunshine.

Temperatures in the UK’s capital are set to reach 16C on Thursday - when it’s predicted the mercury in the Catalan city won’t get above 12C.

According to the Met Office, the temperature in London will also beat Madrid for much of the week.

The capital is due to bask in another stretch of sun as the unseasonably warm and sunny start to March continues.

Forecasters have predicted that skies will remain clear all the way through until Sunday after one of the gloomiest winters in years.

The Met Office has predicted that temperatures will steadily rise throughout the week and may climb to 16C on Thursday.

The forecaster predicts that the sunshine could be broken up by an overcast day on Friday, with the mercury dropping slightly to 13C, but temperatures are expected to climb back up to 16C on Sunday.

A ridge of high pressure will stick around into next week, meaning there will be “plenty of fine weather on the cards”, Honor Criswick, meteorologist at the Met Office, said.

Meanwhile, BBC Weather predicted that there could be constant sunshine through until Sunday.

The BBC believes there may be plenty of sun, clear skies and a gentle breeze until Monday, when the weather is expected to become slightly cloudier again.

London has finally experienced some brighter weather following one of the capital’s gloomiest winters in years.

London recorded seven days without sun last month. Staggeringly, parts of the capital endured zero minutes of sunshine for seven consecutive days for the first time in nearly 50 years.

Met Office data sent to the Standard shows that Heathrow saw just 22.1 hours of sunshine for the whole of December.

The record for the most days without sunshine in London was 13 days in 1959.
