London weather latest: UK to bask in 28C hot spell after washout few weeks

Much of the UK, including London, is finally set to experience a warm spell after a washout July and early August.

Forecasters say temperatures could hit a peak of 28C in parts of southern England by Thursday.

It will be the first time the mercury has soared above 25C since July 8 after a wet and drizzly summer.

Drier conditions are expected across the country this week – albeit still with a chance of rain in some areas further north.

However, meteorologists have warned that the warm weather will be short-lived and heavy showers will return by the weekend.

Sky News weather producer Joanna Robinson said: “The week ahead will see rather cool and changeable conditions for the first few days, with showers or longer spells of rain, something we’ve been used to recently.

“But a build in pressure around the middle of the week will bring something more settled and warmer, albeit briefly.

“A southerly flow will allow temperatures to rise above average, by day and night, with a high of around 28C likely on Thursday.

“However, it will be short-lived, with rain moving through on Friday, returning the cooler airmass that’s been dominating.”

Monday was expected to be dry with sunny spells in London, while Tuesday will be cloudier. Temperatures are expected to peak later in the week with the Met Office forecasting a high in London of 25C on Thursday.

It comes after Storm Antoni wreaked havoc at the weekend, with heavy rain and gusts of up to 70mph.

Events were cancelled across the country, including the Dorset Jazz Festival, the Isle of Wight’s Chale Show and Newcastle upon Tyne’s two-day music event LooseFest.

Bibby Stockholm, the barge set to house migrants at Portland Harbour, Dorset, was battered by a storm.

Whitby was washed out with floods as the North Yorkshire coast was drenched by torrential rain.
