London weather: Chance of frost overnight as wintry weather continues

Temperatures across the capital are set to plunge to 1C overnight into Tuesday with a chance of frost in some of the more rural areas.

The Met Office say London could experience thunderstorms on Monday evening after spells of heavy rain throughout the day.

But the forecaster adds that the rain and showers gradually clear away towards midnight making way for patchy frost as temperatures plunge.

It is hoped temperatures will begin to get warmer toward the end of the week.

The midnight chill follows a wet and windy London marathon on Sunday which also saw stargazers treated to a spectacular display from the Northern Lights on Sunday night.

A geomagnetic storm around northern areas and some central parts of the UK meant the aurora borealis could be seen further south than usual.

The aurora is said to have been visible as far south as the English Channel due to the severity of the solar storm.

Meanwhile, a long range weather forecast for King Charles’s coronation suggests the celebration will be met with sunny weather, with warmer-than-average temperatures predicted.

The Met Office predict for the period of 28 April to 7 May predicts a mixture of settled and unsettled spells.

The Met Office said: “Moving into May, we may see a spell of more settled weather developing, with predominantly dry conditions across the UK.

“However, there could be some rain and strong winds in places at first, mainly in northern and western areas.

“Overall, temperatures will likely be below average to start in the far north but will increase to slightly above average through the period.”
