London Tube Strike 2022 LIVE: Grant Shapps slams Tube workers ‘repaying’ taxpayers with strikes after Covid bailout

Grant Shapps has slammed Tube workers who he said are “repaying” taxpayers with strikes after they were bailed out during the Covid pandemic.

The Transport Secretary tore into militant union bosses for causing misery for tens of thousands of Londoners with the industrial action, which is also hampering the city’s economic recovery.

He tweeted: “For the 2nd time this week, tube strikes have brought London to a standstill.

“Given the government has provided almost £5bn to protect services & TfL jobs throughout the pandemic, this is no way to repay hard-pressed taxpayers who are simply trying to get to work & home.”

London is enduring a 24-hour Tube strike for a second time this week.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union on Wednesday night decided to go ahead with the strike across the entire network in a bitter dispute over jobs, pensions and conditions.

By 11am the Central, District, Piccadilly and Northern lines were operating a part service.
