(Picture: Rightmove)Londoners are most likely to find a house or a flat with a garden in Croydon, according to new research declaring the area home to 132,836 garden properties.
The top ten London areas with private gardens also include some Inner London areas (Zones to 3), such as Lewisham with 112,463 gardens properties, and neighbouring Lambeth, which has 108,524.
The new ranking by seed company The Grass People shows Londoners have the most expensive gardens in the UK. Those in the capital pay an average of £2,348 per m2 for their outdoor space, and every single borough has more homes without gardens than with them.
Outer London boroughs dominate the top ten such as leafy Barnet in north London with 122,373 garden properties, and suburban areas like Bromley (120,799 ) and Ealing (114,620) also high up in the list. Wandsworth and Enfield are also brimming with green space.
The results change for different types of property. Those looking for a flat with a garden are far more likely to find success in more central areas, with Westminster boasting the most garden flats in London at 77,354. Lambeth, Wandsworth and Southwark are other garden flat hotspots.
For those needing more space, Bromley has the most houses with private gardens (93,453) followed by Croydon (92,144) and Havering (78,456). The data also reveals the London borough with the fewest garden properties is the City of London, which has just 554 properties.
While London is the most expensive place to have a garden, the area in the UK that is paying the least for their garden is Telford. Here the average cost per metre squared (m2) totals just £376, with an average garden size of 495 metres. This is followed by Hull where the cost per m2 is £379 and Sheffield where the cost per m2 is £393.
The cheapest London gardens are in Barking and Dagenham, where the average cost per m2 is £1,826, and Croydon which costs £2,182. The most expensive London borough for a garden is Hackney, where garden space costs £3,802 per m2.
Chris McIlroy, a spokesperson at The Grass People said: “We found the research to be surprising that the difference in the cost of gardens differs so much throughout the UK and even in the same city depending on the type of house you own. Having access to an outdoor space is important for your health and mental wellbeing, we believe that no matter what their intended green spaces should be affordable and easy to look after.”
