London's oldest wine bar hits out against plans for Champions League final fan zone

Businesses in central London have raised concerns over plans for a fan zone to show the Champions League final on June 1.

The Greater London Authority has made an application to close off the road from Embankment Tube station to the area between Westminster Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge

Villiers Street and Victoria Embankment Gardens would also be shut under the plans and neighbouring businesses have hit out at the placement in the city centre.

Amanda Whiteside, who runs Gordon’s Wine Bar in Villiers Street, which is reputed to be the oldest one in London, told the BBC: "If you have got 30,000 or 40,000 people coming through, it will be impossible.

"If something happens, how do we get emergency services down here and how do we get through the vast numbers of people?"

The Champions League final will be played out in Wembley, which will put pressure on the capital’s transport and infrastructure, although the venue has played host before.

Arsenal and Manchester City are among eight teams which could feature in the final.

Ms Whiteside said: "There’s going to be live entertainment and music broadcasting throughout the day until the match is finished, late into the evening.

"The volume of noise would be very unpleasant for our customers.”

She added that she is fearful of the threat of violence from fans and scenes mirroring the final of Euro 2020, which was also hosted at Wembley.

Martin Deutz, whose Craven Street address backs onto the proposed fan zone, said:  "It's the violence, it's the scale of it and it's the concern that no event of this type has been held on the Embankment.

"The GLA has given no information about how the crowds will be controlled or how they will be managed and kept to areas where they will be safe".

The Greater London Authority and Westminster Council have been approached by the Standard.

They are set to make a decision within the coming weeks.

Other teams still in contention for the Champions League are Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona.
