London's highest roof garden set to neighbour Battersea Power Station

London’s highest vegetable patch, a herb garden and yoga lawn are among features expected to be included in the designs of a huge new roof terrace next to Battersea Power Station.

Latest images of the 1,200ft-long gardens overlooking the former electricity generator also show barbecue spots, sun decks and fitness areas, plus spaces for communal events such as cinema screenings.

The gardens sit on top of buildings designed by “starchitect” practice Foster + Partners, which are expected to be completed by mid-2021. They are part of the third phase of the £9 billion regeneration of the Grade II* listed power station and the 42 acres of land around it.

The plans for the Battersea Roof Gardens have been drawn up by the team behind the New York High Line — James Corner Field Operations — and will be delivered by Holborn-based landscape practice LDA Design.

The boom in roof gardens means London’s elevated green spaces now cover 371 acres — bigger than Hyde Park — beating other cities known for their high-rise gardens including Singapore and Tokyo.

LDA Design director Ben Walker said: “The public and private spaces of this incredible site are designed to cater for the communities of the future.

“We are tackling modern problems such as loneliness, mental and physical health through a variety of spaces that bring people together physically, emotionally and culturally.

“We want people to be surprised by their new home, we want them to be proud and to expect the unexpected, keeping the magic of living in London at the very forefront of their minds.”

The £1 billion third phase of the project will create about 1,300 homes in two blocks to the south of the former power station together with a new high street that will be the development’s main gateway.
