London Protests LIVE: Pro-Palestine march in central London ends as eight arrested

A pro-Palestine protest billed by organisers as one of the largest since war broke out between Hamas and Israel is taking place in central London on Saturday.

The Metropolitan Police said it is prepared for a “significant policing presence” to halt clashes with counter-demonstrators amid claims by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) that hundreds of thousands of people will attend.

Thousands of people have gathered in Whitehall before marching to the US embassy in Nine Elms Lane, south-west London.

Activists are holding signs that read “Free Palestine. Exist! Resist! Return!” and “Hands off Gaza”.

During the protest, a 79-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence after allegedly making a Nazi salute towards the counter-protest area.

The protest is being organised by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, with demonstrators from five other groups expected.

The protest comes after a proposal by President Donald Trump earlier this month for the United States to consider taking ownership of the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, a counter-protest by Stop The Hate is taking place at the junction of Grosvenor Road and Vauxhall Bridge, along the march route.
